Greetings! To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students need to learn to use writing as a way of offering and supporting opinions, demonstrating understanding of the subjects they are studying, and conveying real and imagined experiences and events. To meet these goals, students must devote significant time and effort to writing, producing numerous pieces over short and extended time frames throughout the year.In an effort to assist our students in achieving these goals, Pines Middle is offering an Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) Writing Camp, and your child has been selected to attend.
As you are aware, all students grades 6-8 are required to take the Florida Standards Assessment ELA Writing test. The focus and styles of writing that the students will be evaluated on are Argumentative and Informational Writing. Students will be asked to analyze, read and cite evidence from several texts related to an assigned writing prompt. Our Writing Camp is designed to provide additional assistance in preparation for the 2016 administration of the FSA Writing test, which is scheduled for the beginning of March.
The purpose of the ELO Writing Camp is to provide additional instruction that explicitly teaches students the strategies and elements of writing a cohesive and sound essay. Our ultimate goal is to continue to provide additional remediation and enrichment opportunities to our students so that they are adequately prepared for the writing assessment in March.
Pines Middle School’s Writing Camp will be held every Wednesday beginning on November 4th, November 18th, December 2nd, December 9th, and December 16, 2015 from 3:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. Incentives will be given to students who attend all 5 sessions. On the reverse side of this letter, a registration form is attached. Please fill it out and return to your child’s Language Arts teacher no later than October 30, 2015. Spaces will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
It is our hope that your child will benefit greatly from these special weekly writing sessions. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Drummond, our Writing Coach at 754-323-4027.
